Organization of the University Library and Services
The Kerala University Library stands as the oldest and most comprehensive university library in the state. With a collection exceeding 358,000 books, it continues to expand by adding approximately 5,000 new titles each year. Complementing this central repository, various specialized Department Libraries are spread across the two major campuses located at Palayam and Karyavattom. Additionally, Study Centre Libraries situated in Alappuzha, Kollam, and Pandalam contribute to the extensive library network. Altogether, the Kerala University Library system encompasses nearly 1 million books, catering to the diverse academic needs of its users.
For operational efficiency, the University Library is structured into 13 distinct sections.
Circulation Section
Handles issue/return of books, renewals, reservations, and membership support for library users.
Acquisition Section
Manages selection, ordering, procurement, and accessioning of books, journals, and other resources.
Technical Section
Responsible for cataloguing, classification, processing, and maintaining accurate bibliographic records.
Reference Section
Provides reference support, research guidance, and access to dictionaries, encyclopedias, and key resources.
Periodical Section
Maintains journals, magazines, newspapers, and bound volumes, supporting current awareness needs.
Information Technology Section
Supports library automation, digital access, e-resources, and technology-enabled user services.
Research Section
Facilitates advanced study with research support, scholarly resources, and guidance for users.
Documentation and Information Services Section
Offers Bibliographical and Information Services, Compilation of Kerala Index, Compilation and publications of Bibliographies, Organising exhibitions & conducting orientation programmes.
UN & World Bank Section
Provides access to UN and World Bank publications as a dedicated depository reference section.
Kerala Studies Section
Curates specialized resources on Kerala’s history, culture, language, society, and regional studies.
Maintenance Section (Stack Room)
Ensures orderly shelving, preservation, stack maintenance, and efficient retrieval of materials.
Tagore Nikethan Reading Corner
A quiet reading space designed to encourage reading habits, reflection, and focused learning.
Resource Centre for Visually Challenged Users
